United House - IP Virtual Private Network

Growing businesses need flexibility. And that’s precisely what United House has gained from working with Telstra International for more than ten years.

The challenge
United House is a leading housing construction specialist operating across London and the south of England. The company has a strong commitment to sustainability, and is committed to regenerating local communities with low carbon, high quality housing developments. Following many years of sustained growth, the company now has five main offices in the Greater London region and up to forty construction sites at different locations. To support continued growth and respond to changing business requirements, United House needed a highly scalable and flexible telecommunications solution.

As the company grew, United House also realised that it needed an effective way to back up its vital systems. It didn’t want to rely entirely on the servers at its Swanley headquarters and had to ensure business continuity in the event of an unforeseen disaster.

The solution
United House subscribes to Telstra’s IP Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to meet all its telecommunications requirements. Its five main offices are permanently linked via Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology with a capacity of 50 Mbps. Up to forty other remote sites are connected to this central IP VPN at any one time using Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology.

The company also rents space at Telstra’s modern colocation facility in central London. It uses this facility to house 12 back-up servers, which mirror the main production servers at its Swanley headquarters and facilitate real time back-ups. The company exchanges 100GB of data between Swanley and the colocation facility every day, in both directions.
