Telstra International to underpin growth plans for Peter Gabriel’s ‘The Filter’

The Filter, a personalised entertainment content filtering system founded by music legend Peter Gabriel, is extending its core IT infrastructure to include Telstra International’s London Hosting Centre - Woking.

The addition of a second failover site helps to provide resiliency and 24/7 availability of service for The Filter’s growing customer base.

The Filter currently manages over a billion recommendations a month for leading entertainment providers including NBC, Nokia Music Store and Dailymotion via a software as a service model. Its unique service allows consumers of online media to receive suggestions of related content, whether it is video, music or news. By integrating with The Filter’s systems, content providers can easily create an enhanced user experience, thereby increasing the value of advertising.

Using Telstra’s Hosting Centre as a secondary back-up facility outside of central London, ensures The Filter’s infrastructure is extremely resilient and able to support its customers’ demands, despite continued growth.

Martin Hopkins, Chief Technology Officer for The Filter, said that having worked with Telstra International for four years, The Filter has first-hand knowledge of Telstra’s high levels of response and availability.

“Our customers often demand evidence of the resilience of our systems, and by working with Telstra International we can demonstrate a very high standard, whilst ensuring the set-up is flexible and scalable enough to cope with new customers,” Mr Hopkins said.

“The state-of-the-art facility at Woking in particular means that we can be confident our systems will remain constantly available and secure and we have no doubt we can rely on Telstra International to deliver this,” he said.

The Filter hosts its core infrastructure in Telstra International’s highly-connected London Hosting Centre – Docklands. By adding a second failover site, The Filter is ensuring it has the optimum business continuity and disaster recovery systems in place to provide maximum service levels to all of its customers.

Andrew Wildblood, Vice President Sales for Telstra International EMEA said the model of online media consumption is rapidly evolving.

“Consumers are increasingly demanding and expect access to relevant content at the click of a button,” Mr Wildblood said.

“The market is also progressing to constantly improve the consumer experience to meet these demands, and we are delighted The Filter is using our sites in the Docklands and Woking to achieve this, and that it recognises Telstra International’s strength in enabling the reliable service its customers demand,” he said.

About The Filter

The Filter is a personalized content filtering system that aggregates entertainment and information and connects users to content that reflects their individual tastes. The developers behind The Filter are leading British software company Exabre. They are backed by high profile investors, including Peter Gabriel's Real World Group and Eden Ventures.

The Filter’s recommendations reach 15m unique users a month in 164 countries via its partners, website and desktop application. Its database currently includes over 7 million songs, 477,000 artists and more than 400,000 movies.

The Filter works by using Bayesian mathematics. When The Filter is supplied with one or more item of interest, such as a song, actor, movie or web video, it delivers a pick-list of items that are statistically relevant by order of probability. It was developed by Martin Hopkins, a physicist who was struggling to manage his growing digital music collection.
