HotLizard, the online recruitment solutions specialist, has selected Telstra International to manage and host its IT Infrastructure, which supports over 200 online recruitment clients. Telstra’s managed hosting and multi-tiered environment in its London Hosting Centre - Docklands will accommodate HotLizard’s clients’ recruitment websites and jobs boards, which serve global audiences and receive over half a million website hits per week.

Telstra’s multi-server, tiered IT environment will support HotLizard’s development and management of a rapidly growing number of recruitment websites with a fully managed virtualised platform, designed specifically to maximize IT resilience and scalability and facilitate high performance and availability for its customers. The technology refresh and move to a managed platform will also save significant operational costs.

The service will handle heavy demands from in-bound traffic and assist a consistent 24/7 online experience for its clients’ site users. It will also enable HotLizard’s to scale up to meet the demands of its rapid growth, which currently totals almost forty new clients a year. To achieve this, the solution uses virtual servers which can rapidly scale to handle ever-increasing traffic, and multiple redundant systems to ensure business continuity. Enterprise-grade tier 1 storage will also be provided through Telstra’s resilient Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure.

With its core systems previously housed in a third party data centre with ageing legacy hardware, HotLizard’s IT department spent increasing time performing routine IT management and maintenance tasks such as updating software patches. Telstra’s solution allows HotLizard to focus on its core business while Telstra designs the network architecture, manages core software updates, monitors and reports on the environments health, as well as maintains security and continuity of data.

HotLizard’s Customer Service Manager, Mr Matthew Brookes comments, “In a rapidly changing industry we face increasing demands on a global level and the ability to flex our business is paramount. The business depends on the quality and reliability of the supporting IT infrastructure, so using Telstra International’s expertise in managed hosting means we can focus on supporting our existing clients without worrying about these factors or restrictions on our capacity to attract more.”

Telstra International EMEA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Tom Homer added, “The internet has transformed the recruitment industry, but the success of online recruitment services such as HotLizard, relies on 24/7 availability. This execution is testament to our capabilities in supporting and managing the IT behind demanding environments.”

The equipment used by HotLizard in Telstra’s London Hosting Centre - Docklands includes the latest high performance blade technology, resilient 10GB network infrastructure with intelligent load-balancing virtual appliances with front end web servers and resilient database clustered servers.

The international operation of Standard Bank, South Africa’s largest bank, has selected Telstra International as its sole Global Wide Area Network (GWAN) provider ensuring a fully active network with high capacity and high availability services into 32 sites across 13 countries.

The multi-million dollar three-year deal sees Standard Bank consolidate its GWAN requirements from two providers to Telstra in order to realise an anticipated annual cost saving of 50 per cent, without compromising the technical resilience or performance of the network.

Standard Bank’s Head of Corporate Infrastructure Services, Kingsley Poulton said the bank chose Telstra International as its primary provider due to its experience with operating cost-efficient global networks, and its proven ability to significantly increase network capacity, whilst enhancing the level of application performance and collaboration.

“One of the key drivers for the consolidation of Standard Bank’s network requirements was streamlining our existing supply chain to minimise complexity and associated costs. Telstra not only demonstrated its technical excellence in network design, but its commercial proposition underscores the added benefit of significant cost efficiencies, which will in turn be passed onto our customers,” Mr Poulton said.

“The new network architecture is also future proof and the additional capacity will enable the bank to introduce a roadmap of innovative technologies to support us as we grow our global platform. Telstra International has proven itself as a trusted partner over several years, and we look forward to extending our relationship with this deal,” he added.

Telstra International’s Chief Executive Officer for EMEA, Tom Homer said the two companies form a natural partnership due to synergies in knowledge and expertise of emerging markets, combined with a global outlook.

“We recognise that a world-class financial institution demands the utmost in reliability and efficiency from its networked systems. Our ability to be a global provider and our existing relationship with Standard Bank provided the confidence to select Telstra as its primary GWAN provider,” said Mr Homer.

“Telstra International is excited to be collaborating with Standard Bank and we are confident that in addition to demonstrable costs savings, our customer will also realise an increase in organisational productivity and performance, combined with greater control and flexibility when making changes to its network infrastructure in response to the ever-evolving conditions we experience in the global financial services market,” he concluded.

PLDT ALPHA Enterprise and Telstra activate international Ethernet offering

Partnership secures leading global financial services customer

Leading Philippine telecommunications provider PLDT, through PLDT ALPHA Enterprise - its business group handling relationships with top tier clients - and global supplier of managed network and hosting services, Telstra International have today announced a partnership to deliver international Ethernet Private Leased (EPL) circuits to Philippine and other global enterprises.

The partner agreement follows Telstra's recent launch of its 'One Stop Shop' (OSS) Ethernet service option and the release of its Ethernet half circuits, and ensures that Philippines now joins Telstra’s growing portfolio of Ethernet-enabled countries. It also complements Telstra’s existing portfolio of networking solutions in the Philippines, including its highly resilient IPVPN services, a converged VoIP inbound service and high quality, low latency access to the public Internet via its Global Internet product.

Mr. Vic Tria, PLDT VP and Head of Corporate Business Solutions said, “PLDT has recognised Ethernet as a driver for growth in the near-term horizon. This partnership further solidifies our relationship with Telstra as both companies benefit from the increase of international Ethernet traffic from the Philippines”.

“Under the agreement, Telstra International’s Global Ethernet portfolio and PLDT’s Ethernet solutions will run on PLDT’s best-of-breed NxGN platform, offering superior value to enterprise customers with high-speed data requirements,” added Mr Jovy Hernandez, Vice President and Head of the Corporate Business Group for PLDT.

The partnership also leverages on both companies’ international Ethernet certifications from the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) – MEF9 and MEF14.

“The MEF is a global industry alliance that comprises more than 150 organizations,” explained Eric Alberto, PLDT EVP and Head of the Enterprise and International and Carrier Business Group for PLDT and SMART. “The dual certifications validate both Telstra’s and PLDT’s investments in best-in-breed infrastructure, as well as world-class execution of network and service roll-out.”

Positive network testing by both PLDT and Telstra paved the way to progress the joint offering and as a result, a leading global financial services institution has just signed an order for a Telstra International EPL service into the islands.

The customer chose the One Stop Shop (OSS) option in order to benefit from a single point of contact for ordering, delivery, billing and support for the EPL service over both companies’ networks from Hong Kong into the Philippines. In addition, the EPL OSS service is also protected, ensuring delivery of a back-up path routed over a second subsea cable system to increase reliability.

Telstra International Executive Director for Global Sales, Mr Phil Mottram said PLDT is the largest service provider within the Philippines and was the natural choice for Telstra's first Ethernet half circuit and OSS solution into this growing nation.

“PLDT proved to be a reliable partner for Telstra, ensuring we can provide seamless internetwork compatibility across both our MEF-certified networks”, said Mr Mottram.

“We are extremely pleased to add the Philippines to our portfolio of Ethernet-enabled countries as we see huge potential in the local enterprise market. In addition, securing business from one of the world’s leading financial services institutions is already testament to the strength of the partnership with PLDT, and we look forward to further developing our relationship in the future,” Mr Mottram concluded.

Telstra International has extensive experience in providing IPL bilateral and half circuits. With around 100 partners and 70 OSS IPL arrangements already in place, Telstra plans to roll out Ethernet through agreements with many additional partners in the near future. The availability of the new circuits based on Ethernet can now enable a greater number of global organisations to benefit from the dedicated bandwidth, scalable capacity and flexibility of the Telstra EPL service supported by Telstra’s intelligent Network Interface Devices (NIDs).

About PLDT

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is the leading telecommunications provider in the Philippines. Through its three principal business groups - fixed line, wireless, and information and communication technology - PLDT offers the largest and most diversified range of telecommunications services across the Philippines’ most extensive fiber optic backbone and fixed line, cellular and satellite networks.

PLDT is listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE:TEL) and its American Depositary Shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:PHI). PLDT has one of the largest market capitalizations among Philippine-listed companies.

Telstra International, a leading provider of managed network services and international data, voice and satellite services, today announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the Challengers quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Asia/Pacific Network Service Providers.*

Compiled by Gartner analysts, the Magic Quadrant examined 15 vendors of IT services for business communications systems worldwide, employing two main evaluation criteria. These include ability to execute and completeness of vision.

Telstra International Global Director, Products and Marketing, Mr Nathan Bell believes that the recognition as a Challenger in the Gartner Magic Quadrant is testament to Telstra’s expertise in supporting its global customer base in the Asia Pacific region, combined with the significant investment the company has made in its products portfolio and infrastructure.

“Asia Pacific is a key region in the global economy and for our customers, the ability to deliver scalable, reliable and cost efficient solutions to support their changing business requirements is essential,” Mr Bell said. “Telstra International operates one of the largest and most diverse networks in Asia Pacific and we continue to invest in this network to support our customers as they face these increasing pressures.

“We are delighted to be recognized as a Challenger by Gartner as we feel it demonstrates our ability to execute and our completeness of vision, based on the needs of enterprises today and in the future,” Mr Bell concluded.

Telstra completed a restructure of the Reach joint venture last year, which provided an expanded platform in the Asia Pacific region, including direct ownership of more undersea cable assets, an international PSTN voice capability, additional Point-of-Presence (PoPs) and satellite services and associated base stations that reach over two thirds of the Earth’s surface. This resulted in increased control over the end-to-end service delivery platform, allowing its enterprise and global service provider customers to experience enhanced customer service, improved service management and delivery and more competitive market positioning.

Magic Quadrant for Asia/Pacific Network Service Providers report states: “MNCs are expanding their operations into China and India, requiring extensive domestic coverage. They are also expanding into new emerging markets such as Indo-China, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East and Africa, which have little or poor network infrastructure. Increasingly, they are looking to their NSP to manage their customer premises equipment, particularly voice infrastructure, across the region.”

ASSC-1 Communications Group Pty Ltd (ASSC-1), a private Australian submarine cable developer, today announced the development of a new Perth to Singapore submarine cable system.

ASSC-1 Communications Group Pty Ltd (ASSC-1), a private Australian submarine cable developer, today announced the development of a new Perth to Singapore submarine cable system.

ASSC-1 will deliver a four-fibre pair cable system which will span a distance of 4,600 kilometres with an initial design capacity of 6.4 terabits per second (TBps), to be delivered through 40 gigabits per second (GBps) technology, with the capability to be upgraded to 100 GBps in the future.

The ASSC-1 system will comprise three express fibre pairs between Perth and Singapore, and one omnibus fibre pair between Perth, Jakarta and Singapore. Telstra, the first international carrier to commit to the new cable, has agreed to purchase one of the 4 fibre pairs from ASSC-1’s fibre optic submarine cable and will also provide landing party services in Perth.

Mr James Chen, Chief Executive Officer for ASSC-1 said that ASSC-1 is a low latency system which will provide the fastest transfer speeds between Australia, Asia and Europe.

“ASSC-1 will dramatically increase the capacity for internet and data traffic between Australia, particularly the west coast, Asia and Europe, and we expect it to take up excess demand from the only existing cable on this route, which is the ageing SEAMEWE3 system. In addition we expect to provide increased diversity for traffic from Asia to the US via Australia,” he said.

Huawei Marine Networks, a joint venture combining the telecommunications systems expertise of Huawei Technologies and the marine segment experience of Global Marine Systems, will supply and install the ASSC-1 system. Matrix Cable Systems (Matrix) will supply the Jakarta Landing through their own cable landing station and will also work with ASSC-1 to manage the Indonesian permit process.

“The Telstra and Huawei Marine Networks agreements entered into by ASSC-1 underpin the development and significance of this new state of the art, high speed submarine fibre optic cable,” Mr Chen said.

Mr Jim Clarke, Senior Vice President of Global Carrier Sales, Telstra International said Telstra is pleased to collaborate with ASSC-1 on this partnership to supply the high speed, low latency infrastructure to cater to the increasing need for carriers and enterprises to readily access and connect to the internet.

“With this infrastructure in place, businesses and individual users will benefit with better and faster support for their network needs as well as much needed diversity out of the west coast of Australia,” he said.

A carrier neutral cable system, ASSC-1 will meet domestic and international carriage demands by providing access to its partners and customers including Tier 1 Carriers, ISP’s and secondary service providers.

The project will begin construction in the first quarter of 2012 and is expected to be completed within 2013, based on current project timelines.

Telstra International, a leading global supplier of managed network and hosting services, today announced an extension to its global network connectivity by opening a new Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Frankfurt and provision of a new low latency telecommunications route from Europe to Asia.

Telstra International, a leading global supplier of managed network and hosting services, today announced an extension to its global network connectivity by opening a new Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Frankfurt and provision of a new low latency telecommunications route from Europe to Asia.

The new interconnection point gives Telstra two major entry points into Europe and access to the major telecommunications hub for Eastern Europe, providing more diverse access to the European market from Asia.

Meeting increasing customer demand for low latency access to Asia, Telstra is also providing a new low latency route from Europe to Asia. The route is regarded as one of the most reliable routes available, whilst the new PoP is ideally positioned within one of Europe’s most geographically central locations.

Once the Frankfurt PoP and new route go live in March 2012, they will be used to enhance support for Telstra’s customers throughout the region. The announcement underlines Telstra’s credentials as a leading Ethernet player in the international marketplace.

Telstra International Senior Vice President for Global Carrier Services, Mr Jim Clarke, said the new route addresses a substantial market for low latency services between the regions, which is being driven by the increasing global demand for high speed service capabilities to support operations such as low latency financial trading.

“The Frankfurt PoP and the trans-Mongolian route offer one of Europe’s most reliable and shortest connections to and from Hong Kong compared to the traditional route via the Mediterranean Sea which is currently used to deliver reliable bandwidth between the two regions.” Mr Clarke said.

Telstra currently has over 1,400 PoPs in more than 230 countries and territories. Most PoPs are equipped to provide a full suite of bandwidth services, with a growing number able to offer IP Services and enable customers to connect into the major Internet exchanges and business customers.

Telstra International, a leading global supplier of managed network and hosting services, today extended the global reach of its Ethernet Private Line (EPL) offering with the launch of a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ (OSS) Ethernet service option and the release of its Ethernet half circuits.

The fully comprehensive OSS service option allows Telstra customers to benefit from a single point of contact for ordering, delivery, billing and support for Ethernet Private Line services, with end-to- end support and diagnostics provided by Telstra’s intelligent Network Interface Devices (NIDs). Alternatively, Telstra’s Ethernet half circuits allow customers to buy a half circuit on the Telstra network and another on a partner network, to build a bespoke dedicated bandwidth Ethernet solution themselves.

Telstra is seeing increasing demand from customers who want to connect their data centres and benefit from the scalability and privacy of EPL services. By offering a comprehensive OSS Ethernet service combined with bilateral half circuits, Telstra is now able to leverage its global network of Ethernet provider partners in countries where it does not currently hold a license to operate, extending the reach of Telstra’s Ethernet service into these locations to meet local demand.

Telstra International’s Global Director of Products and Marketing, Mr Nathan Bell said,” We have extensive experience in providing International Private Line (IPL) bilateral and half circuits. With about 100 partners and 70 OSS IPL arrangements already in place, we plan to roll out Ethernet through agreements with many additional partners in the near future. The availability of the new circuits based on Ethernet can now enable a greater number of global organisations to benefit from the dedicated bandwidth, scalable capacity and flexibility of the Telstra EPL service supported by Telstra NIDs.”

Part of a comprehensive portfolio of next-generation Ethernet services, Telstra’s global EPL service is both simple and cost efficient to deploy. The ability to buy inexpensive Ethernet equipment for a Wide Area Network (WAN) or to reuse existing Ethernet equipment, coupled with cost-effective Ethernet local access options, reduces both operational and capital expenditure, whilst maintaining business flexibility.

Telstra International, a leading global supplier of managed network and hosted services, today launched its Global Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Protection solution. This new service provides added protection to multinational customers’ Internet-facing infrastructure against a wide range of DDoS attacks.

The service offers ‘in the cloud’ protection and mitigation of DDoS attack traffic, averting congestion of customer Internet connections and protecting customer web infrastructure, whilst legitimate, clean traffic is delivered to the customer.

Telstra International’s Director of Portfolio and Marketing, Mr Nathan Bell said most global organisations today are reliant on constant online availability and Telstra International’s Global DDoS Protection solution helps businesses to avoid disruption and mitigate unexpected costs through a highly resilient protection service.”

“DDoS attacks have increased tenfold since 2005. As they have also become increasingly targeted, security has rapidly become a boardroom issue”, said Mr Bell. “A cloud based DDoS service is now amongst the best ways to protect your Internet-facing web sites against malicious attacks and Telstra can integrate these seamlessly with customers’ IT systems, with expert support and experience close at hand.”

The service makes it easy and cost-effective for the customer to implement DDoS protection and is capable of mitigating the latest DDoS threats, with Telstra’s Security Operations Centre (SOC) systems and staff offering around-the-clock 24/7 monitoring, extensive analysis and highly effective mitigation and traffic cleaning through global cleaning centres. It also offers Telstra customers near real-time visibility to traffic and service status information via a web-based reporting portal.

“As a best of breed and fully integrated service, our Global DDoS Protection service highlights our extensive experience in managing security for global businesses,” comments Mr. Bell. “It offers peace of mind to enterprises, with our global operations mitigating DDoS risks, and in many cases, without the customer having ever realised a threat existed.”

Telstra International, a leading global supplier of managed network and hosting services, today jointly released the findings of the sixth annual “State of the Asian CXO 2011” survey conducted by CIO Asia Magazine with Fairfax Business Media, revealing that the effectiveness of Asian CXOs is being compromised by vicious, systemic short-term management cycles.

According to the seven-country wide survey, which included responses from more than 360 Asian CXOs from China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, the majority of CXOs recognized that IT can create competitive advantage and enable business innovation. However, their effectiveness is challenged by ongoing cost management and reduction pressure (60.7%), the lack of time for strategic thinking/planning (46.4%), and difficulty in proving the value of IT as well as the inability to meet expectations from the business (45.3%).

Other findings of the 2011 survey results included:

Top three technology priorities: ‘Business Intelligence’ (47%), ‘Business continuity planning’ (45.9%) and ‘Enterprise IT Security’ (44.2%);

Top three management priorities: ‘Aligning IT and business goals’ (54.1%), ‘Controlling costs’ (47.0%), and ‘Business continuity/risk management’ (41.5%);

Top three challenges in the CXO role: ‘Pressure for cost management and reduction’ (60.7%), ’Shortage of time for strategic thinking/planning’ (46.4%), and ‘Difficulty proving the value of IT’ (45.3%);

Cloud computing priorities: Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) received fairly equal rankings by the CXOs in most countries except in India and Indonesia which had SaaS as the top priority and;

Attitudes towards hosted services: Over 50% of CXOs indicated they have already adopted hosted solutions or are in the process of rolling out such solutions in selected parts of their organizations. However, 31% of CXOs shared that they have no plans for hosted solutions, which suggested some hesitation towards such services.

Telstra International Executive Director Mr Phil Mottram said that with the uncertain economic outlook for 2012 and tight IT budgets, organizations will need to break the cycle of short-term management and turn to selective outsourcing as an IT strategy in order to focus limited resources on core revenue-generating activities.

“By innovating business processes, such as with hosted services and cloud computing services, CXOs can help their businesses stay ahead of the competition, tap new opportunities and grow despite the challenging market conditions,” commented Mr Mottram.

“Business process innovation can help CXOs ensure better alignment of their IT strategies with the business’ priorities. Their first step can be to ensure a network centric ICT infrastructure design to be best placed to take advantage of the benefits of cloud services, shorten time to market new offerings to customers, minimize risks when expanding into new geographies, achieve greater economies of scale, boost business performance and optimize utilization of current assets,” he concluded.
