Managing Director

Matthew joined Telstra in 2011 and is a Managing Director of Telstra Ventures. Matthew has worked with almost 50 global venture backed companies including a number of successful acquisitions and IPOs. He currently serves as a director on the boards of Mandoe Media, IP Health and Health Engine. Investments which Matthew has worked on previously include: Seek, LookSmart, Telera, OneBox, Engana, RedSheriff and ManageSoft.

Matthew holds a BE (Electrical) from the University of New South Wales, an LLB from the University of Sydney, as well as an MBA from the AGSM completed at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Matthew also holds the FAICD qualification and completed the HPLP at the Harvard Business School.

I'm Matthew Koertge,
Managing Director

Matthew is a Managing Director of Telstra Ventures. Since its inception five years ago, Telstra Ventures has invested $300M+ in 37 companies around the world of which seven have achieved liquidity events. Matthew started in the venture capital industry in 1998 and has worked with 70+ global venture backed companies of which many have achieved successful acquisitions and IPOs.

Matthew was previously a Founder and General Partner at Accede Venture Partners; the head of the venture capital team at Deutsche Bank Capital Partners in Australia; and a founding team member of the venture capital team at Macquarie Bank. Prior to this, Matthew was a software/hardware design engineer and project manager at Fujitsu.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney, and a Master of Business Administration from the AGSM, completed at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Matthew has also completed the HPLP at the Harvard Business School and he is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

I'm Albert Bielinko,

Albert joined Telstra Ventures in 2015. Previously, he was an Investment Manager at a ~A$3bn global boutique funds management firm where he was responsible for origination, leading execution of investment opportunities and active asset management. Prior to this, he was an investment banker at Goldman Sachs for almost 5 years. Whilst at Goldman, Albert covered Technology, Media and Telecommunications clients and executed a significant number of transactions, ranging from complex multibillion dollar mergers to small private sales to IPOs. Albert is a non-executive director of the NSW arm of the National Heart Foundation of Australia. Albert commenced his career as a corporate lawyer.

Albert holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance & Accounting) and Bachelor of Laws (with 1st Class Honours) from the University of Sydney, where he received multiple scholarships.

I'm Ben Armstrong,

Ben Armstrong has a special interest in the health, education and broadband optimisation sectors. He has over 15 years of experience working in the IT and telecommunications space. Prior to joining Telstra Ventures, Ben worked as Head of Business Development in Telstra Business and was General Manager of Telstra’s SaaS business. Before Telstra, Ben worked at VeriSign Australia and as a solicitor at Minter Ellison, negotiating IT agreements and preparing companies for listing. In 1999 he founded and raised funding for an internet start-up offering transactional services to online merchants.

Ben holds a BSc (Computer Science) and LLB (Hons) from the University of Melbourne. He serves on the board of Panviva Pty Ltd.

Gurpreet has over 20 years global experience across industries including IT & Telecommunications, managed services, ecommerce and investment banking. Prior to joining Telstra Ventures, he was Head of Segments and New Offers for Global Enterprise & Services – International, driving new offers and venture company solutions to targeted segments. Before that he was Group Manager for Segment Solutions at Telstra’s Innovation, Products and Marketing division. Here he developed a new practice to focus on increasing vertical and horizontal segment market share through delivery of relevant offers to support Telstra’s Network & Applications Services business. He has also held roles as Group Manager for Unified Communications and Group Manager for IP Telephony, responsible for the launch of Telstra’s Hosted IP Telephony service.

Gurpreet first joined Telstra in 1990 as an undergraduate and worked extensively in the area of product management before becoming Regional Director, EMEA  for Telstra in the UK. He also has experience working at HSBC as Associate Director for Equity Analysis – Internet Software & Technologies and Connect.com and AAPT (Australia) as General Manager for Product Marketing.

Gurpreet holds a Masters in Marketing (Melb), a Post Graduate Diploma in Corporate Finance (Swinburne) and a Bachelors in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (Melb).

Bobby Gorcevski joined Telstra in 2010 and has held various roles in IT and Product Management. Chris joined Telstra Ventures in mid 2015 to lead its China investments.  Chris brings more than 20 years of experience in direct investment and business development with on-the-ground investment practices in China, Korea, Taiwan, India, Malaysia and the US. Most recently, Chris worked at Intel Capital focusing on mobile, communications and internet services investments in China and Asia and prior to that he co-founded a technology fund based in Silicon Valley. Chris has a significant investment track record in Asia and the US including several major exits in acquisitions and IPOs.

Chris holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, a MS in Control Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BS in Engineering from TsingHua University in Taiwan.

Prior to joining Telstra in August 2013, Cynthia was the Chief Executive for Barclays in Australia/New Zealand. In this role she was responsible for the Global Markets, Distribution, Infrastructure and Investment Banking operations of the Bank in this region. She was also a member of Barclays’ Asia Pacific Executive Committee and on the Board of the Australian Financial Markets Association. Cynthia’s investment banking career also involved roles at Merrill Lynch and UBS in Australia.

Cynthia is a founding member of the Australia Advisory Board for Room to Read, a global organisation focused on literacy and gender equality in education.

Cynthia graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance and Japanese studies. She also holds a Masters of Applied Finance from Macquarie University and completed the Oxford Strategic Leadership Program in 2013.

Geoff joined Telstra Ventures as its CFO in June 2012. Prior to joining Telstra Ventures, he was CFO of a Sydney based venture capital firm, Innovation Capital, and sat on the boards of its investees. Geoff founded a venture backed software company in San Francisco and held management roles for both Diageo and Allied Domecq in Europe. Earlier in his career, Geoff trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG.

Raj joined Telstra in 2000. He has over 15 years of architectural experience in evaluating, designing and deploying large scale enterprise and industry technologies.

Raj has developed deep experience across multiple industry verticals including emergency services, M2M, banking and finance, mining, oil and gas, health, retail, media, radio and satellite.

He has held various leadership roles in the Architectural and Business Development units within Telstra’s Enterprise and Government business. Steve Schmidt joined Telstra in 2001. Previously, Steve held various leadership roles within Telstra, such as: Account Director for Westpac Banking Corporation; National Manager Managed Radio and Wireless; National Manager Mobile Applications and National Manager Industry Solutions. Steve has worked extensively with telecommunications and cloud based applications to create transformational outcomes for Enterprise & Government customers. Two projects of national significance include Telstra’s National Emergency Alert Solution and Telstra’s New Train Communication System for the Australian Federal Government.
